CHARACTER INFO
NAME: Abigail "Abby" Flynn.
CHARACTER AGE: 18 (turning 19 in the fall.)
SPECIES: Siren.
BACKGROUND & HISTORY:
As a child it is always easier to believe in the fairytales that parents tell us; Santa Claus is real, the tooth fairy will give you a dollar per tooth, and one day your daddy will come back to us Abigail. Fairytales are supposed to protect children, to give them hope but all it ever gave Abigail was a cynicism a mile deep; Santa wasn’t real, the tooth fairy money came from her mom’s purse and her daddy sure as hell wasn’t ever coming back. By the time Abigail was eight, she’d stopped believing in fairytales and began believing in the hard facts of science. Science didn’t hurt you, it might not be able to tuck you in at bed at night but it was never going to hurt you the same way as waiting for a father’s goodnight kiss every birthday and never getting one.
Science was Abigail’s goodnight story, she never gave fairytales another thought until her tenth birthday and he was just there. Just like her mom had always promised. A tall, handsome prince like out of her mom’s stories and her mom, her mom just glowed when she was around him. Seeing her mom truly happy and charmed, Abigail knew fairytales could come true. Except Abigail should’ve known that her dad was never the hero; he was always the villain. When he left, Abigail knew that fairytales were for suckers and her dad, the man who had fathered her, was the worst.
Nine months later and Abigail’s life was turned upside down by her mom giving birth to another beautiful girl; Gabrielle. Vowing to protect her little sister from her dad, Abigail always tried to act as a balance to her mom’s idealism especially when it came to Abigail and Gabby’s father. Despite Jack never being around, her mom always made sure the girls had everything they could possibly ever want. And although curious, Abigail never managed to figure out where it all had come from.
Stubborn to a fault, Abigail grew up into a jaded and sarcastic teenager to everyone but her mom and Gabby. Not wanting to be a burden on her mom when she wanted more expensive things like a new motherboard for one of her computers or a car, Abigail took a job at a small family electronics store in her hometown. Listening to her calling and to her instincts when it came to old pieces of junk, Abigail did quite well repairing and fixing up even the most broken pieces in the store.
Despite her good grades, Abigail was determined to go to the local community college to study computer engineering and coding as she didn’t want her mom to struggle with Abigail’s tuition fees. But sometimes life was like a fairytale and Abigail received a package about a scholarship she could apply for, working harder than ever to get her grades up Abigail joined extracurricular classes and clubs to improve her participation so she could get her scholarship. Graduating second in her class, she got her scholarship and took the money to study at one of the best schools in the country.
Arriving at her college, she was amazed by it all and loved the wonder and magic of it all. For about a week, until one of the kids she was at college with her mentioned they’d never heard of her scholarship. After a little bit of digging and a lot of hacking Abigail finally figured out where the money had come from. Namely one Jack Flynn- her father. Abigail vowed to not take a penny from the scumbag which meant dropping out of a college she’d only just started.
Instead of returning home though, Abigail pretended to her mom everything was going fine while she holed up in a dingy motel and began to try and trace her father’s activity. Managing to get a trace on one of her father’s card, she tracked him down to recent activity in Siren Cove. Heading towards Siren Cove, she ditched the start of her school to drive up the coast to try and confront him.
PERSONALITY:
Abigail, like her mom, used to be an idealist. She lived and yearned for fairytales but after one too many broken promises; she became a bitter kid and even bitterer teenager and young adult. For years she blamed herself, thinking there must’ve been something wrong with her- something broken that she could fix- that had kept her dad away. Constantly tinkering with things, Abigail developed an insatiable curiosity taking apart things just to see how they ticked and always managing to put them back together better than before. But she could never put herself back together, never the right way to make her dad come back and stay. And after a while she stopped wanting that.
Intensely stubborn, Abigail has always tried to look after herself and to stand on her own two feet. She doesn’t trust anyone but her mom and her sister, looking out for herself and her family she has never let anyone in. She doesn’t want to get hurt again, not like she has been so she always puts barriers- mostly her self-deprecating humour to keep people distant. Sarcastic to a point of bitterness, Abigail isn’t the world’s warmest or friendliest person to meet. And the only people who know her truly is her family.
Abigail is smart and good with details but always fails to see the bigger picture. Like the fact her mom, a single parent, has never worked a day in her life since Abigail was born and yet can always afford to give her amazing gifts or pay their rent. Or the fact her mom has been getting tired more and more recently and envelopes from the local hospital. These are the kind of things that passes Abigail by; she focuses too much on the minutia and not on the external world around her.
OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: Up until now she’d never even heard about Siren Cove except on reports about that actress her kid sister loves. Abigail thinks the rivalry is the most stupid thing she’s ever heard of; she really wonders if they’re all that dumb and if they haven’t read Romeo and freaking Juliet.
LIFESTYLE:
Neither rich or poor, Abigail’s family have always been fairly comfortable despite the fact that her mom has never worked a day in her life since she became pregnant. For the Flynn girls, they’ve never wanted for anything and have always gotten everything they could have possibly wanted as they’ve both grown up.
Although her mom has never worked, Abigail is stubborn and independent and has always worked hard to earn what little extra she has in life. Once she establishes herself in Siren Cove, Abigail will probably earn a small wage working in an antiques shop, repairing and restoring old pieces of electronics.
Having been due to study Computer Engineering, Abigail’s too late to apply for scholarships but is considering transferring to community college to tide her over until she can reapply for scholarships in the following year. Intuitive with machines, Abigail is both able to take apart a computer piece by physical piece, she can also take apart the operating system and recode it to her design. Taking apart things is both Abigail’s hobby but her one true love.
Initially Abigail will be staying in a dive of a motel, completely rundown with rats and insects, Abigail will eventually get enough money to move into a shared apartment as the girl sticks around longer than she intends to. Abigail can eventually be found hanging out where the coffee is best and the wifi signal is strongest, usually sticking to the Quill she can occasionally be seen trying to sneak her way into places with fake ID.
POWERS & ABILITIES: Abigail has always known her father Jack was a siren and has always taken great pains to be as little like him as possible. She’s avoided bodies of water larger than a bath and has never learnt how to swim because of it. If she was forced to water, she would have very little control over her form and would be probably the first siren in history to drown due to her lack of swimming ability.
Although Abby is super awesome with tech, people eh not so much. She is very lacking in the charm department due to the fact that she would do anything to not be like her asshole of a father.
